A new study suggests that a drug called Finasteride may have a higher risk of breast cancer than do prescription drugs.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at 523 women who had a diagnosis of early breast cancer after receiving finasteride. Researchers compared these patients' breast biopsies to those from the men who took a placebo, or placebo group, of women who had not yet received finasteride. The findings showed that women who took finasteride had a higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to those who took the placebo group.
Finasteride is a prescription drug that belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Finasteride lowers the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which is a hormone that shrinks the walls of blood vessels. Finasteride blocks the action of 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into the more potent form 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as Proscar, Propecia, and Finasteride.
Finasteride was found to reduce DHT levels in both the men and women who received finasteride. The risk of developing breast cancer was higher for those who took finasteride and had a higher risk of breast cancer for those who took the placebo group.
Finasteride is also used for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Finasteride is a prescription drug that is not approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this use. The FDA has not approved finasteride for the treatment of this type of cancer.
The researchers looked at data from the study to see if the drug was associated with any increase in breast cancer risk.
The researchers found that finasteride was not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, the researchers found that women taking the drug had a higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to women who did not take the drug.
“The results of this study are encouraging and warrant further research,” said study co-author Dr. Ruth Ehrlich, MD, a leading breast cancer specialist at Weill-Cornell University inxiety, who was not involved in the study.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that shrinks the walls of blood vessels. Finasteride works by blocking the action of a drug that reduces the levels of DHT in the body, thereby preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Finasteride is sold as Proscar or Propecia. The FDA approved the drug in 1992, but only for use in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which enlarged prostate gland is found at the end of the urinary tract.
Finasteride is also used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men. It is also used off-label for hair loss. The drug has been linked to breast cancer, but this connection has not been proven.
A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in April suggests that the drug may have a higher risk of breast cancer.
Dr. Mary Anne Smith, MD, a breast cancer specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, said that the study was the first of its kind that looked at the use of finasteride for treatment of BPH, and she is glad to see that it has played a role in the discussion about breast cancer.
“I think this study is just another example of the kind of studies that have come up in the medical community about the possible benefits and risks of finasteride and prostate cancer treatment,” she said.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in April in combination with a follow-up mammography study, showed that patients who received finasteride were at a lower risk of developing breast cancer than did patients who received a placebo.
The researchers analyzed data from the Cleveland Clinic's and the U. National Library of Medicine, which includes more than 1,700 breast cancers.
They did not find an association between finasteride use and increased risk of breast cancer.
The study was led by Dr. Elizabeth E. Johnson, M. D., a board-certified breast cancer researcher at Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.
Johnson said that she was not involved in the study and had no financial ties to the drug company.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
